In April 2012 our family was forever changed when Xander was pulled into this world 12 weeks early at 28 weeks gestation (BirthStory). Normally he would not qualify as a micro preemie at that age but he was IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restricted) and weighed only 1lb. 5oz. (600 grams). He is an amazing, strong little guy. We had a fairly uneventful 92 day NICU stay with the exception of a blocked bowel which required emergency exploratory surgery and then surgery to repair bi-lateral hernias. I am starting this blog after being inspired by other preemie mom blogs. I think writing about our adventures in raising a preemie will be therapeutic and help me process this journey we are on. My co-workers used to joke about helping me out when the little Hassels came along, and now we have one that isn’t too much of a hassle to take care of except maybe the pumping schedule! We love our little Xan the man!
