Growth Comparison Pictures With Teddy
One idea I came across and loved was preemie growth comparison pictures. It’s difficult to fathom how tiny they can be and then amazing to watch them grow exponentially bigger than that item. It’s nice to use a common item that is well known so people can get a sense of their actual size. I’ve seen dollar bills used (I wouldn’t recommend this unless it has somehow been sanitized), baseballs, footballs, Sophie the teething giraffe, lovies, pens, pencils, blankets, beanie babies & other stuffed animals.
I didn’t figure this out right away or I would have had something that we could have safely put in his isolet after it was washed and drenched in hand sanitizer or steam sanitized in the dryer.
As it happened, when Xander was born he was gifted a teddy bear from his Aunt and it was joked about that the bear was big enough to hold him since he was so tiny! The bear watched over Xander at his bedside in the NICU and I thought it would be neat if we could get a picture of him being held by this teddy bear and then when he was all grown up I would totally be that annoying mom that forces him to take a senior photo (how embarrassing right?) with that same bear so I can proudly display it at his graduation party next to the first photo.
Well our first opportunity came when he was coincidentally 6 weeks old (34 Weeks Gestation). He was stable and doing well feeding and growing. We had to give him a bath and that meant he would be free of wires for a short period and we could take some photos while keeping him warm under a warmer. His first photo shoot took all of 15 minutes with 1 outfit change and he was exhausted, poor guy. He still wasn’t very big, he was 2 lbs. 11 oz. After that I vowed to take a comparison photo every two weeks to document his progress. There were a few times I missed when he was critically ill or I just forgot (and that is OK! To the sleep deprived exhausted mom’s out there forgive yourself if you miss one, or a few, it’s not the end of the world). After 6 months I started to just do monthly comparisons and after 18 months it gets a little sporadic but my goal is to continue a comparison shot each year at his birthday.
Xander was ill and comparison pics were not a priority at 10 weeks.
Think I got busy and forgot to get 16 weeks.
